Thousands of soccer fans have paid their closing respects to the legendary Diego Maradona in Argentina this morning as he will be laid to rest today.

Maradona died aged 60 after struggling a cardiac arrest at his Buenos Aires home on Wednesday.

His coffin is currently placed at Government House in Buenos Aires and the turnout has been remarkable.

A flurry of Boca Juniors fans, who Maradona played for twice in his career, are throwing their jerseys over his coffin which is decorated with the Argentina flag.

Shouts of “Te amo [I love you], Diego!” are clear to hear and many fans have provided a prayer to the World Cup winner.

Security are ensuring all visitors preserve their distance, however the ardour on show proves how cherished Maradona is in his domestic country.

The service has been stay for over an hour and there are still fans, old and young, turning up to say thank you and goodbye.

President Alberto Fernandez has declared there will be three days of national mourning for Maradona, who is widely regarded as one of football’s biggest ever players.

“You took us to the pinnacle of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the best of all. Thanks for having existed, Diego. We will pass over you for a lifetime,” he stated in a announcement on Twitter.

Supports of former membership Napoli, who Maradona won two Serie A titles with, took to the streets on Wednesday night time to rejoice the existence of a membership legend.

Fireworks and flares were set off near a mural of him and chants of his identify rung loud into the night.
