A former special adviser on political issues to Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has issued a warning: If the region’s complaints are not addressed, the north may soon make a decision that would affect its political destiny.
Baba-Ahmed urged northerners to be united and be cautious of “traitors” who are attempting to undermine the area from within in a video that is making the rounds online.
“North should be very careful, and avoid traitor politicians and also avoid what might divide them.”
Baba-Ahmed recalled how churches and mosques were attacked in an effort to disrupt the area during the Boko Haram assaults during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaigns.
He emphasised that all northern groups—Muslims, Christians, Fulani, Baju, and Mangu—must work together.
“You understand now, no politician will come and say, ‘where are the northerners, follow me’. Who are you?” he asked.

Baba-Ahmed said the region has grown more politically conscious during the eight years under Buhari and the current fights under the present administration.
According to him, the north today deserves leadership that genuinely understands and addresses its circumstances.
“By God’s grace, in the next six months, the north will come out and tell their next direction,” he said.
“It’s left for the remaining Nigerians either they follow us, or we go alone. We know nobody will become president without the North.”
Ahead of the 2027 elections, Baba-Ahmed also sent out a strong warning, emphasising that any effort to tamper with the process might have disastrous results.
“Conducting a bad election in 2027 may lead to the end of Nigeria, I swear to God,” he said.

The time to act was drawing near, the former presidential adviser said, adding that stakeholders and elders in the north were getting ready to make a stand.
“There will be a time we will come out and say it’s okay, and it’s soon. This injustice is over. We know who we are.”
