The Labour Party (LP) asserts that it has not designated the southeast as the zone for its 2027 presidential ticket.
The party was responding to statements attributed to LP national leader Julius Abure.
Obiora Ifoh, the LP’s national publicity secretary, said in a statement released on Monday that Abure’s remarks were misconstrued.
At a meeting on Saturday, Ifoh said that the national chairman only told a few Southeast members that Ndigbo might still win the presidency if they could connect with other factions.

Drawing parallels to the Yoruba political bloc’s achievements via strategic realignments, he also urged the Igbos to strengthen their ties with other areas to increase their prospects in 2027.
“Labour Party is a national party and has large followership across the country and, therefore, the issue of zoning does not arise,” the statement reads.
“In the 2023 general elections, the party won seats in the north and across the southern states, and we are working hard to surpass that achievement in future elections.

“Candidates for every position must emerge through highly competitive and democratic processes, as the party’s constitution does not permit zoning.
“We, therefore, regret the misinterpretation of the party’s noble intention by a section of the media. Our party was quoted out of context.”
Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, hails from the south-east.
