Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has said that Nigerians and the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) would face off in the 2027 presidential election rather than the APC and his party, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Makinde made this statement on Tuesday during the Channels Television show “Politics Today.”
“The 2027 election won’t be PDP versus APC; it would be Nigerians versus APC. Mark my word on that,” he said.
The next election would be a litmus test for the Bola Tinubu administration, the governor said, criticising the APC government for the faltering economy and growing security threats in the nation.

He emphasised that his party, the PDP, was still the hope of the average person and that it would not repeat the error that cost it the 2023 presidential election.
Makinde claimed his party committed a serious error by giving the presidential ticket, the position of national chairman, and the position of director-general of the presidential campaign to individuals from the northern area exclusively, citing the last vote as a lesson.
The Oyo governor reiterated that the exclusion of southerners from the three major slots dealt a self-inflicted blow to the PDP that culminated in the loss suffered by the party in the poll.

The Intercept reports that in the build-up to the last poll, Iyorchia Ayu from the North Central was the PDP national chairman, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the North East was the party’s flag bearer, and Aminu Tambuwal from the North West was Atiku’s campaign director general.
“If the three main influential positions to take us to the election were occupied by the North East, the North Central, and the North West, how do we sell that position all around the country,” Makinde argued.
He said that if Atiku had chosen Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State at the time, as his running mate, the PDP ticket would have been more powerful.
