A woman, Adaobi Enechukwu has been confirmed dead in Toscana Hotel’s elevator mishap in Asaba, Delta State Capital Territory.
The hotel is located along Okpanam Road in Asaba, Comrade Victor Ojei, Director General of Young Nigerian Rights Organization, who spoke to The Union Nigeria confirmed.
The deceased, was allegedly a civilian staff of the Police Hospital beside B Division, Asaba who functioned as Laboratory attendant.
According to a Ojie, Adaobi who hails from Adazi Nnukwu, Anambra State, stepped into the hollow way of the elevator which malfunctioned.
Ojie blamed the mishap on hotel management, said, “the deceased didn’t know that the elevator had descended.”
“The elevator door was open but the elevator chamber was not there. She stepped in and fell down the elevator way.”
Ojie said there was no signpost by the hotel management to warn users about the faulty elevator. “There was no caution sign or anything around the elevator to show it was malfunctioning. The lady had walked pass the elevator, but turned back to use it. She met her death.”
“She met her untimely death at the Hotel while she was there for a function, the elevator failed due to mechanical fault.”
“It’s too bad to have such bad elevator in a hotel and it is still open for business despite the death of this young woman.”
“The Elevator door was open and the poor girl walked into that trap without knowing that the elevator didn’t come up.” He added.
Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Onome Onobrakpeya has confirmed the incident adding that it was under investigation.
She said the command was yet to confirm if the deceased was a civilian staff of the Police as alleged
At the time of this report, the hotel manager was under detention at the police headquarters in Asaba, Delta State.
