The Senate has commenced investigation into the lopsidedness in the constitution of members of the National human Rights Commission without any from the North-East.
The constitution of members in to the commission had three persons from Kebbi State alone out of four persons from the North West.
The Senate minority leader Eyinaya Abaribe who presented the petition on behalf of Femi Falana informed the Senate that, “This petition has to do with the appointment of members of the Governing council of the National Human Rights Commission. (NHRC)
“The summation of the petition is that in constituting the members, no member of that council is from the North East zone.
“In constituting the members’ three members out of four representing the North west zone are from one State Kebbi State.
He said the petitioner is asking the Senate to look into this matter in the interest “of our national unity and our laws as established by this Senate.”
He said there is no judicial remedy being sought.
The Senate President referred the petition to the Senate committee on Ethics, privileges and public petition to report back in two weeks.
