The government of Enugu State has promised to look into and detain anybody involved in the unlawful taskforce of obtaining revenue from scavengers in the state.
Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the secretary to the State Government, revealed this in Enugu on Tuesday.
Onyia condemned the unlawful taskforce’s operations and stated that the state government will look into the issue and prosecute individuals posing as members in accordance with the law.
However, he admitted that the state government had established a committee through his office.

He clarified that because scavengers endanger public safety, the committee was tasked with examining some of the possibilities that may assist in handling their activities in the state.
“I want to let Ndi Enugu know that there is no task force that has been set up by the government of Enugu state around environmental matters.
“We are going to find out as a government who constituted this taskforce. We have tons of evidence as we are investigating who constituted this taskforce and where the revenue collected was paid into,” Onyia said.

As a result, he cautioned the public against giving money to any individual or organised group posing as government revenue collectors.
He said that the governor had ordered the prompt recovery of the funds that the so-called environment task group had unlawfully acquired.
