Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has stated that he fully supports President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Matawalle said that this swift action is essential to bringing stability to the state’s unstable political climate in a statement released on Tuesday by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations.

He said that in order to address the current political crisis that has impeded the provision of democratic government and the welfare of the people of Rivers State, the emergency rule is an essential step.

The minister recognised the seriousness of the political situation in Rivers State and the pressing need for involvement after considering the president’s speech on the state of emergency.

Matawalle drew attention to the state governor’s regrettable destruction of the House of Assembly, which has left the state without a functioning legislative for more than 14 months.

The statement added, “This action has contributed to the ongoing political impasse and the inability of the government to effectively serve the people.”

The minister also cited a recent Supreme Court decision that denounced the governor’s conduct as unlawful and reiterated the need for a functioning legislature under the constitution.

Matawalle also voiced worry over recent allegations of militant threats and vandalism, emphasising the necessity of a coordinated effort to bring peace and security back.

He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to protecting Rivers State’s critical infrastructure and guaranteeing the safety of its residents.

“Any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order will be met with a resolute response from security forces.”

He thus hoped that the state of emergency would clear the path for a peaceful and democratic Rivers State that would benefit all of its citizens and urged all parties involved to seize this chance for improved governance and collaboration.
