A lecturer at Bayero University, Kano, Idris Salisu Rogo has disclosed that no fewer than 1.07 million people in Kano abuse drugs.
KANO FOCUS reports that Rogo revealed this in Tsanyawa local government, Kano State on Thursday, during the commissioning of land to be used in building a proposed rehabilitation centre for drug abusers.
Rogo who doubles as the Managing Director, Almustaqbal Psychotherapy and Counseling Services Centre, said the figure was part of the research findings they conducted across Nigeria.
The academic predicted that unless something is done to check the current excesses, 70 per cent of people in Kano State may be in drug abuse by 2050.
“Presently, there are over three million drug abusers in North West states, out if which about 1.07q million are in Kano State. If we don’t make any effort to tame this menace now, about 70% of Kano State population alone could be into drug abuse,” he said.
Rogo explained that the centre expected to be completed in eight months would have the capacity to accommodate about 5,000 drug abusers who would be trained in various skills and knowledge to become better people in the society.
He added that when completed, the centre will be the biggest of its kind in Africa.
