In Jikoko village, which is in Mpape area of Federal Capital Territory, a day-old infant has been left behind.
According to reports, the infant was discovered in a box, wrapped in fabric, and abandoned on a wooded walk next to a community chicken farm.
An Aliyu, a local resident, told our correspondent on Saturday that the community was taken aback by the revelation.
“We woke up to the sight of a day-old baby kept in a carton.
“The carton was placed along a bush path close to a poultry farm in Jikoko. The police were notified, and they took the baby to a health centre for medical attention.”
When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, verified the event and stated an inquiry had commenced to find the mother of the abandoned kid.
“Investigation has commenced to locate the mother of the baby. The baby is currently with the social welfare department,” she said.
There have been previous instances of newborn abandonment in the Mpape region.
Another baby was discovered in January 2025 behind the incomplete Red Bricks Market in Mpape on a woodland walk next to Crush Rock.
After being detained, the mother admitted to the police that she had left the child behind because she was poor.
In addition, the command voiced alarm in December 2024 over the growing number of abandoned infants in Abuja.
