In order to discuss President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials, the Senate has convened in secret session.
At plenary on Thursday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from Tinubu, which prompted the announcement of the secret session.
Following that, Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved to have a closed session in accordance with Senate Rules Order 135.
Abba Moro, the Senate Minority Leader, seconded the measure.

According to The Intercept, Tinubu imposed a six-month suspension on all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, along with Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, after declaring a state of emergency in the state on Tuesday night.
Tinubu justified the exceptional move in a nationwide broadcast by pointing to security dangers, constitutional violations, and protracted political instability.

A power battle between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is the cause of the crisis that has immobilised the government in the oil-rich state.
Additionally, the President designated Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas (retd.) as the only administrator to manage the state’s operations until things return to normal.
Ibas worked under former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2021 as the Chief of Naval Staff.
