A Lagos High Court in Ikeja has pronounced the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly illegal and unconstitutional.
Justice Yetunde Pinheiro invalidated the House’s January resolutions and actions that resulted in Obasa’s removal in a ruling on Wednesday.
Mojisola Meranda, then appointed Speaker, and the Lagos State House of Assembly were sued by Obasa, who contested the legitimacy of the procedure that led to his dismissal.

Obasa contended, through his lawyer Chief Afolabi Fashanu, that 36 legislators had decided to remove him while the Assembly was on recess and he was abroad.

He maintained that the session was invalid, as it was convened without his authority or a formal delegation of power, in violation of the House’s procedures.
The suit was based on nine grounds, referencing relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
