Abortion is now legal in France. The country made history by being the first nation to include a constitutional guarantee of abortion rights.
By a vote of 780 in favour and 72 against, the measure was decisively passed by French lawmakers on Monday March 4th 2023.
The amendment stating that abortion is a “guaranteed freedom” in France is strengthened by this vote. This momentous move improves the nation’s access to abortion services.
This occurs at a time when there are obstacles to abortion availability everywhere, including in the US and some parts of Europe.

Abortion was first made legal in France in 1975. Since it is now protected by the constitution, no government or set of new laws will be able to revoke it.
Once the referendum was passed, the famous Eiffel Tower was lit up with the impactful phrase “My body, my choice”.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal emphasised the significance of the ruling by saying that legislators had a moral duty to remember the bravery of the women who had to endure risky, illegal abortions in the past. “Above all, we are sending a clear message to all women: your body belongs to you,” he emphasised once more.
President Macron enhanced the joyous mood by announcing a formal ceremony to mark the ratification of the amendment on International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8.
The Catholic Church, however, continued to be against it. “In the era of human rights, there can be no ‘right’ to take human life,” declared the Pontifical Academy for Life. Before the decision, a meeting of French bishops reiterated this stance.
