A 25–35% pay raise for academic and non-academic employees of the state’s higher institutions has been authorised by the Kano State Government.
Comrade Abdullahi Waiya, the Commissioner for Information, revealed this when speaking to journalists about the State Executive Council meeting’s conclusion,
According to him, the pay increases, which go into effect in March 2025, are meant to boost the education sector and enhance worker welfare.
“The academic staff will be receiving a 25 percent increase, while the non-academic staff will benefit from a 35 percent increase,” Waiya said.
He underlined that the decision is consistent with the government’s State of Emergency on Education policy, which calls for improving education.
“This decision underscores the determination of the government to improve the conditions of workers and reinforce the education system,” the commissioner added.
The council also authorised N3.4 billion for a number of state-wide development initiatives in addition to the pay changes.
“To improve the state’s electrical infrastructure, the council approved N612.4 million for converting external electrical systems to an underground network at Government House and relocating power lines along Ahmadu Bello Way,” Waiya revealed.
He further announced that N148.9 million was allocated for road maintenance at the Kano State School of Technology, to be carried out by the Kano Road Maintenance Agency (KARMA).
“Additionally, N367.9 million was approved as an advance payment for the expansion of Zaria Road, from Silver Jubilee to Dantata & Sawoe main yard,” he added.

The council also approved N662 million for feeding students in boarding schools during the third to fifth weeks of the current academic term, as well as N348 million to settle outstanding energy bills to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) for November and December 2024.
Additionally, N184 million was allotted by the government for two ambulances: one for Nuhu Bamalli Maternity Hospital and one for the Government House Clinic.

The council authorised the reopening of the Kiru Reformatory Institute to rehabilitate disturbed teenagers as a step towards social progress. The Ministry of Women, Children, and Disabled Affairs has also established a new Department for People with Disabilities.
“The government remains committed to policies that promote inclusivity and social welfare. The reopening of the Kiru Reformatory Institute will ensure the rehabilitation and reintegration of troubled youths into society,” Waiya stated.
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners has been granted N100 million to hold its Quadrennial Delegates Conference in Kano, the commissioner further said.
