The controversy over who becomes the next Vice Chancellor (VC) of University of Ibadan (UI) has been laid to rest as the institution’s Senate elected the current Deputy Vice-chancellor (Academic), Prof. Adebola Ekanola.
Prof. Ekanola has been recommend to the school’s governing council as the acting Vice Chancellor.
At the election of the acting Vice Chancellor presided over by the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Olayinka Omigbodun, at the International Conference Centre of the university, Prof Ekanola polled 275 votes to beat other four contestants.
The current deputy Vice -chancellor (Research, Innovation and Partnerships), Prof. Olanike Adeyemo polled 13 votes, Prof. Adigun Agbaje scored 15, Prof. Ayo Oluleye scored 80 votes while Prof. Gbemisola Oke got 14 votes.
At the election, a total of 400 votes were cast with 337 returning valid.
With the election of Prof Ekanola as the acting Vice Chancellor, the University governing council is expected to ratify the election for him to act for the next six months, and midwife the process of selecting a substantive VC for the University.
The tenure of the University’s outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, expired on Monday, November, 30.
