As all roads of students in public universities in Nigeria once again lead to classrooms, following an 8-month long strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), The Union Nigeria has sampled the opinions on how the news is received across board.
A trending video on social media has seen an obviously elated student, in Church recounting how tired he was of staying at home during the long impasse between the federal government and ASUU.
The same cannot be said of other students who were reached by our reporter.
“I am emotionally unstable to return back to school” – Final year Student of University of Nigeria Nsukka says
Alex chidimma usofia, a final year student of the department of Mass Communication of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, lamented how she was emotionally unstable to go back to school because of the long stay at home which has practically affected her drastically.
“Going with the fact that the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on an eight month strike because the Federal Government didn’t keep to their agreement rather there was a breach of contract.
“This has affected majority of the students in our federal universities especially and even has made most student develop indifferent attitudes towards date of resumption.”
This Strike has disrupted by Plans for Life
Ofongu Lovewinner, a final year student of university of Nigeria, Nsukka, quips that the strike has disrupted her life plans.
She said, “Not only did it disrupt the way I already planned my life but everything will end up being rushed by the lecturers and hereby a whole lots of we student would just have to read to pass instead reading to know it well and is really a pity I must say, but all thanks to God the strike was suspended.”
Another student who spoke, Ms Vivian Ugwu, a second year student of Adult Education decried the negative effect of the strike on Nigeria’s education system.
“To be honest with u, I don’t even think I can even open my book now because my brain is no longer assimilating anymore because of this long strike”.
My Best friend got Pregnant during the strike
Nnoneme Jennifer, a 300L student of English and Literary studies of University of Nigeria Nsukka complained bitterly that the strike has uttered her plans; all I planned have been thrown into the sea.
She disclosed that her best friend was currently pregnant, “what will be her fate now as a result of the strike.
“I hope that federal Government will ensure to their best ability that something like this wouldn’t be heard of anymore.”
Strike, Part of Life Hurdle – Lecturer tells Students
In an interview with Mr Nnnaji, a senior lecturer of the University of Nigeria Nsukka shared his opinion saying the strike was not really easy for them because they were not paid and in such case how would they go to work with empty stomachs.
However, he added that, “We believe the Federal Government is addressing it already.”
He advised student to take all that has happened as a step to greater success and achieve all they desire.
