Two people who are accused of killing Justice Azuka, a member of the state house of assembly have fled from detention, according to the Anambra police command.

On Christmas Eve, while Azuka was heading home for the celebrations, he was kidnapped and attacked by gunmen.

Azuka’s dead body was discovered on the Second Niger Bridge early this month.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra police spokesperson, announced the suspects’ escape in a statement on Tuesday evening.

According to Ikenga, two suspects who were helping agents had accompanied them on an investigation to apprehend a receiver of automobiles used by the criminal group but had since fled the site.

He said that the escape was reported to Anambra’s police commissioner, Ikioye Orutugu, on Tuesday evening.

“During the onslaught operation by the operatives, the suspect (the receiver) was arrested, and two vehicles suspected to have been snatched from the unsuspecting members of the public were recovered,” the police spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“Unfortunately, the other two suspects fled the scene.”

He added that the police commissioner has deployed “human, operational, and intelligence assets” to re-arrest the suspects.

Ikenga said he also ordered “immediate disciplinary action” against officers found wanting in the escape of the suspects.
