A yet unidentified teaching staff of English and Literature Department of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin, simply known as Mr Bode, has allegedly raped a final year student of the varsity.
The Union Nigeria gathered from a source that the lecturer, who is the Project Supervisor of the victim who is yet unidentified, on Tuesday, allegedly committed the act in his office.
According the source, the lecturer locked the victim in his office for hours, after allegedly committing the criminal act.
The University’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Benedicta Adeola Ehanire, when contacted by The Union Nigeria via telephone, said she was not aware of the incident.
She said, “Sorry, I have not heard anything like that. I cannot tell you anything about what I have not heard.”
Efforts to reach and the Student Union Government’s President, Comrade Foster Amadin, met deadlock at Press time.
However, the University’s SUG Attorney General, Comrade Ekene Anienze on his Whatsapp Status posted at 9.16pm on Tuesday, confirmed the possibility of the incident.
The status read, “a news has been romancing the walls of UNIBEN on an alleged rape incident that occurred today, which a lecturer in the department of ENL is the accused.”
“I wish to state that we are already on the matter as at 9.00pm, I already spoke at length with the CSO and by morning, she assured me that together we all will get to the root of the matter.”
“So you all should be calm while we dig deep on the matter, just be rest assured that such lecturer if found guilty will not be shielded at the altar of technicality but will be made to pay dearly!” the status read.
When contacted via phone, SUG’s Attorney General, Comrade Ekene, said they were still working on the issue, but he could not give vague details.
He promised to revert back after 10am when the union must have concluded a meeting with the school authorities
“I saw your text. Why I have not replied is because we are still working on the issue. I don’t want to give vague details. Let me say by 10am we must have been done with the issue and I will revert back to you. Thanks.” he said.
