There are several people who have been in prison for many years, some of these people were imprisoned at a young age and they have matured in prison.
In this article, we will be talking about the longest serving prisoner in the World who has been in prison for over 71 years.
His name is Francis Clifford Smith and he became a prisoner at the age of 23, Francis who was born in the United States was given the title of the Longest Serving Prisoner because he has been in prison for a very long time.
Although Francis Clifford Smith is currently the oldest living prisoner still in jail, not much public information about the man exists.
According to Wikipedia, Smith is serving a life sentence at the Osborn Correctional Institution for murdering a night watchman named Grover Hart on July 23, 1949. At the time Smith was only 24 years old and has now spent almost all of his adult life behind bars.
The details of the murder are not clear and Smith may not have actually fired the weapon that killed Hart – Smith had two accomplices.
Despite this, Smith was initially sentenced to death in 1950 but narrowly managed to have his sentence changed (Smith already had his head shaved in preparation for the electric chair).
In 1967, Smith escaped for 11 days when he was being transferred to a minimum security prison farm. Smith was recaptured, and since then he has not been in the news and has never sought to be released on compassionate grounds due to his age.
