A widely shared video depicting claims that MRS Oil’s premium motor spirit (PMS) lasts 13 minutes longer than NNPC’s has been refuted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.
In a statement on Saturday, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC’s chief corporate communications officer, said the accusation is misleading false, unjustified and wholly unsubstantiated.
He clarified that the assertion stems from amateur, unconfirmed research that lacks professional control, legitimacy, and accuracy.
In a TikTok video shared by @valorreviews, a guy was comparing the running times of MRS and NNPC PMS, often known as petrol, using two little tiger generators, which are known in Nigeria as “I better pass my neighbour generators.”
According to the video, MRS Oil’s Dangote-refined petrol is more economical and has a longer shelf life than the PMS found at NNPC outlets.
“MRS petrol stations have a partnership with Dangote Refinery, meaning you can buy locally refined fuel from them. I went to their station at Alakpere, Lagos, and I got 1 litre for 925 naira,” the man in the viral video said.

“For comparison, I also bought fuel from NNPC in Ojojubega, Lagos, and it cost 945 naira per litre. That’s 20 naira more than the MRS fuel. Now, looking at both fuels, the Dangote fuel looks a little bit darker.
“For these small generators, you have to mix the fuel with engine oil before use, so I did exactly that for both of them. I filled both generators with the same quantity of fuel, turned them on, and set a timer.
“And after 17 minutes and 51 seconds, the generator running on NNPC fuel died first. Meanwhile, the generator using MRS fuel kept running for 30 minutes.
“That’s a 13-minute difference, a big deal, especially when it’s cheaper. So yeah, it looks like the Dangote-refined fuel actually lasts longer than the fuel you get from at least NNPC, and again, it is cheaper.”
NNPC Defends Fuel Quality: ‘Our Petrol Is Carefully Formulated
Soneye underlined that to give customers the highest possible efficiency, longevity, and environmental sustainability, NNPC meticulously formulates its fuel with one of the best compositions.
“Furthermore, it is important to emphasise that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos—where this deceptive video was created—is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security,” Soneye said.
“Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of petroleum products supplied to our consumers.
“This misleading video represents yet another desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and tarnish NNPC Ltd’s reputation.
“We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians.
“Henceforth, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations.
“Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held fully accountable under the law.”
Soneye asked the public to disregard such fabricated content and instead rely on verified sources for accurate information.
