President Muhammadu has reportedly sacked the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
It would be recalled that Emefiele had declared interest to contest in the 2023 forthcoming election having purchased the N100 million presidential form of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
However, after several outcries by the public, calling for his resignation shortly after purchasing the form, Emefiele approached a Federal High Court in Abuja to prevent the country’s electoral body INEC from disqualifying him.
He had also approached a Delta State High Court on Friday, May 13 and was granted his request to restrain the Board of the CBN, and INEC from stopping him from seeking an elective post while he retains his job as governor.
President Buhari in a response to the expression of interest by his appointees ordered the resignation of every one of his cabinet members interested in vying for political offices in 2023.
While some of his appointees obeyed the order, many including the Governor of the CBN failed to resign. He however withdrew his bid to take over from President Buhari in 2023.
On Tuesday, the CBN governor withdrew the suit he filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation over his presidential ambition.
His exact reasons for withdrawing the suit remain unclear, his Lawyers, however, explained that he prayed the court to discontinue the suit and make an order striking it out.
The Street Journal had reported how Emefele was walked out of the Villa by Buhari after booking an appointment with the president in order to explain to him, his own side of the story about the purchase of the N100m presidential nomination and expression of interest form by some faceless farmers which he claimed he did not approve of.
Buhari who was visibly angry ordered him to go back to his office, move his things out of the office and tender his resignation within 72 hrs.
But when Emefiele was asked what he discussed with Buhari, he had responded, “There is no news now, but there will be news.
“Let them have a heart attack. It’s good to have a heart attack. I am having a lot of fun”, Emefiele said of his critics who had asked him to resign honourably as the CBN Governor and face his political ambition.
